Provision of legal information for cadets should be carried out on a regular basis

The 1st, the 2nd and the 4th year cadets of Maritime Institute named after Vice Admiral V. A. Kornilov, a branch of Admiral Ushakov Maritime State University, came up with such opinion during the event, which took place as part of the public legal education. The meeting was held by representatives of the university, the Seafarers' Union of Russia and the Sevastopol Transport Prosecutor's Office.

Chairman of SUR Sevastopol Primary Organization Artem Boev told that the topic of the meeting was the protection of seafarers' rights.

-We discussed the content of an individual employment contract, which must comply with the provisions of the Maritime Labor Convention, the grievance procedure on board and on shore, as well as the benefits of collective agreement on board and membership in a trade union, - he explained. – Also, we were able to consider examples of the most common violations of seafarers' rights while at sea, such as non-payment of wages and delayed repatriation. Besides, the cadets were given recommendations on where to apply for help in case of troubles at sea.

Everyone agreed that such meetings should be held more often.

-Cadets are future seafarers, and they should be not only aware of their rights, but, most importantly, to be
able to assert them, - Artem Boev concluded.
