SUR KTO will hold seminar on employment

On November 20, 2018, the Kaliningrad Territorial Organization of the Seafarers’ Union of Russia (SUR KTO) will hold a seminar for seafarers and fishermen on employment on seagoing vessels and protection of workers’ rights.

The current economic situation prompts more and more  Kaliningraders to go to work at sea. An alluring prospect of supposedly “fast” money attracts not only seafarers, but also those people whose work has no relation  to sea. So, now we see a sharp surge in   unqualified personnel in marine. It should be noted , that  the number of relevant job offers has also increased.

Often  such work relationship does not result in tackling of financial problems of  workers, but quite the opposite. Seeing a huge number of people willing  to work at sea – often on any terms, businessmen of variuos kinds, including shipowners, regard this as their benefit. Some of them decide to save on seafarers’ salaries, others don’t  supply their ships at all or don’t care about safe working conditions. There are even such cunning guys who can - for a price, of course,  find you a job or “make” you  all necessary documents. Then - get out as you can.

The Union regularly receives complaints related on all such cases. Someone asks help in recovering their wages, someone needs repatriation, sometimes it could be a tragic case –  injury or  illness during a voyage, and no one to help.

Having analyzed this trend, the SUR KTO  decided to hold an open meeting with seafarers, fishermen and their family members, where trade union experts, lawyers, legal experts, including those from  international law firms, will tell about the key points concerning employment, concluding contracts, completion of documents,  etc. The experts will answer all the questions - not a single appeal will be left without attention!

The meeting will be held in a conference format.
